From the Classroom to the Cabinet Shop:

The Story of Buck the Builder

Why I Traded the Gradebook for a Tape Measure

Most people are surprised to learn that before I was Buck the Builder, I was Mr. Hogue, the teacher.

Growing up in a family of educators my mother taught for 40 years and my sister for over 25, teaching felt like the natural path. I’m a proud Texas A&M Class of 2008 graduate, and for two years, I gave my all to the classroom. I loved working with the kids, but I realized something crucial: great teachers have a specific passion for the art of pedagogy. My passion was elsewhere.

The “aha!” moment happened on a phone call with my sister. She was recommending a book on classroom management to help me out. As she spoke, I looked down. My feet were propped up on a coffee table I had built in my spare time. Right next to me was a book not on teaching, but on house framing.

I realized then that while I owned the teaching book, I hadn’t even cracked the spine. But the construction book? I knew it cover to cover.

In 2013, I decided to follow that passion. My wife, Renee (TAMU Class of 2010), and I launched Buck the Builder. We started with a simple goal: provide quality carpentry and custom cabinetry. But as we got into the industry, we realized that homeowners didn’t just need better cabinets, they needed a better experience.

Today, we use that same “teacher’s heart” to educate our clients, communicate clearly, and bring a level of professionalism to remodeling that is far too rare in this industry.
